The following year was the last for the 924S, and U.S. buyers took home 2,190 examples, still more than 52 percent of total production. Manufactured for only the 1987 and 1988 model years, the “S” model Porsche 924 incorporated the same 2.5-liter Porsche-manufactured 4-cylinder engine that was standard on the Porsche 944. In 1987, U.S. buyers purchased 6,947 examples of this bargain-priced sports coupe, nearly 78 percent of Porsche's total 924S production. Porsche 924 S Specs (1985 - 1987) - Technical Specifications for Years 1985, 1986, 1987. Someday in the future the Porsche 924 will be a collectible. However, the Audi/VW 2.0 Liter engine block was discontinued after the 1986 model year, so Porsche had to decide whether to kill the model or do something different. That was fine until VW decided to end production of the model’s Audi-based motor in 1984. With sales of the 2.0 924 continuing, Porsche continued to make the car for sale outside America. The Pick of the Day, a 1987 Porsche 924S, was a major step up, however, after Porsche fitted its most-affordable sports car with the same 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine as the 944, slightly detuned to 147 horsepower compared with 163 in the bigger car. In the meantime, you can enjoy picking up low mile nice-looking examples for dirt cheap, like this 1987 Porsche 924S offered for $6,000 in Sacramento, CA via craiglist. This larger engine replaced the VW 2.0-liter power plant in earlier cars, and delivered a nearly 50% power increase, with a factory-rated 147 horsepower and 134 mph top speed. It might not happen this week, or even in the next decade, but at some point in time even the Audi-powered 924 will be worth something to somebody. The suspension also was improved. The 924 however soldiered on, living in the 944’s shadow as Porsche’s cheap seat.
In 1987, when the 924S appeared, the changes under the hood took an already excellent-handling sports car, and added the power it needed to be “a real Porsche.” For just two model years, Porsche replaced the pedestrian Audi-created 2-liter engine, with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder powerplant, the same engine had been the basis for the successful 944 model.
