If you ask for Directions on the Google Maps app you might be presented with more than one route, Google would select the fastest one and there is no way to change that. Just draw your route on the map merely swiping your finger and get the route total distance right away. Every time I start a new search in Google Maps for directions, the default transportation method is always self-driving, and I need to change it to public transportation or walking.


However, you can select one of the other slower route options by tapping one of those routes, but I do not know of any mechanism to make Maps to select by default one of the slowest routes. You can also use it to find the best route or route alternatives, and plan your trip accordingly. Google Maps will highlight the quickest route for you in blue, but you can always change your route by selecting one of the grey alternative routes, or clicking and dragging the route to customize it. Strangely, there’s one feature on Google Maps that just isn’t used all that often because Google doesn’t make it crazy-convenient to use, and that’s the option to save a route in Google Maps.
