Jean-Michel Basquiat’s 1982 painting Untitled (LA Painting) sold for $110.5 million (£85m) at Sotheby’s in New York, to become the sixth most expensive work ever sold at auction. Basquiat died of a drug overdose on August 12, 1988, in New York City.

In this painting, Basquiat mixes the precedent of historical painting with urban graffiti to create a heroic character that is part self-portrait and part voodoo shaman.
